The Mijas Masters At Mijas Bowls Club
Report by Christine Wilson Photographs by Eric Wilson
What a difference a week makes, regarding the weather that is! The CDS Triples were played in brilliant sunshine throughout and yet, on the first two days of the Mijas Masters, just a few days later, play had to be cancelled because of overnight rain causing standing water on the green. So, instead of being played from Saturday 18th to Sunday 26th January it started on Monday 20th and ran over to Monday 27th.
The early rounds of both the Pairs and the Triples went along without problems, but when it came to the semi-finals they could not be played at the same time as John Fenton, already through to the semi-final of the pairs, became a stand-in for the injured Kevin Bloe in the Triples and made his way into that semi-final as well.
One of the semi-final matches of the Pairs was between Gordon and Margaret Kain from Santa Maria and Tom Rogers and Angie Holt from Lauro. In a very close game Tom and Angie were ahead up to the 17th end, but lost out to Gordon and Margaret. The second semi-final between John and Ann Fenton of Mijas and Gerry Aldridge and Mo Huddleston of Santa Maria was another very close game, but Ann and John dropped a six on the 16th end and had no time to make that up.
The Pairs final between Gordon and Margaret Kain and Garry Aldridge and Mo Huddleston was also an excellent match which, according to Margaret was played in the right spirit and could quite easily have gone either way. However, it was Gordon and Margaret who became the winners.
The Triples semi-final between Alan Turner, Sue Walker and Alan Plimmer and John Warn, Geoff Hall and Dine Warn, all of Santa Maria, did not disappoint, but John Warn stated afterwards that had he not played with such wide swinging woods which did not suit the rink he was on, it could have been so much better. The second semi-final saw John Sullivan (Benalmadena), John Fenton and Geraldine Robinson (both Mijas) playing against Barry Holt, Jackie Simmonds and Julian Thomas of Lauro. The three skipped by John Sullivan got off to a bad start but managed to catch up with only two ends to go to clinch victory by three shots.
That final was therefore between Alan Turner, Sue Walker and Alan Plimmer and John Sullivan, John Fenton and Geraldine Robinson; this time the latter three made a good start and were in control of the match from the beginning. Alan Turner's three conceded after 16 ends with the score at 24/7.
Before the prize giving a buffet prepared by Carol Wright and Carol Jacobs was served and enjoyed by players, spectators and helpers. This gave time for Samantha Austen, a representative from BMI, the sponsors of the tournament, to leave her office duties to present the trophies. BMI specialise in all types of insurance from health, car and house right through to public liability and community and you will find their office in the Nordic Centre on the Carretera de Mijas.
