Costa del Sol Annual Ladies' and Men's Triples held at Mijas Bowls Club

Report by Christine Wilson

With an entry of 20 men's and 15 ladies' teams the Costa del Sol Annual Triples took place at Mijas Bowls Club from 6th to 9th January in the most glorious sunshine.

The sponsor of this event was Specsavers and Judy Borland and Amrik Sappal, husband and wife directors of Specsavers in Fuengirola were in attendance to present the prizes on Thursday afternoon.

One of the highlights of an early round was when a team of Mijas ladies, namely Val Thornton, Ann Fenton and Doris Mellor, who all normally play lead position, achieved a "hot shot". To the uninitiated readers that means all nine of their woods scored and it is not often accomplished. These three made their way to the semi finals but were knocked out by one shot after an extra end by the team from Bel Playa.

The other ladies' semi final was a very close contest between two teams from Santa Maria, skipped by Lynda Hall and Margaret Kain. All six ladies played well but it was Margaret's team which went through into the final. The men' semi finals were both exciting matches featuring a Mijas team headed by Hal Briscoe, who admitted getting off to a bad start, but catching up later, versus the eventual winners from Bel Playa. The second semi final was between Craig Lewis' team from Miraflores and Gordon Kain's team from Santa Maria, with Gordon's team becoming the winners of that match.

So, both finals were Santa Maria versus Bel Playa. The men's final, Gordon Kain, Dale Tomlin and Alan Turner, the Santa Maria three against Brian Todd, Lennie Dineen and John Pearce of Bel Playa was not such a close match and, after seventeen ends the Santa Maria men conceded leaving the Bel Playa team the victors.

The ladies' final between Margaret Kain, Sue Walker and Nancy Shaw of Santa Maria and Mary Moynihan, Cynthia Scott and Amber Dineen from Bel Playa was a much closer game with a score of 12 all after 15 ends. At one time it looked as though it was going to be a Bel Playa double, but in the end it was the Santa Maria ladies who were victorious.

Following an excellent afternoon's bowling the prizes were presented by the Specsavers directors, Judy and Amrik, to the very worthy winners.
