Rounding off the Busy Bowling Season at Mijas.
As the summer approaches once again the "snowbirds" who migrate to Spain for the warmer winter weather are beginning to go back to the UK for the start of the outdoor bowling calendar there. Those who spend the whole year in Spain are now looking forward to their summer season which at Mijas means bowling under floodlights on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and early morning on Sundays and the start of the Summer Triangular against Lauro and Benalmadena.
The final events which took place at Mijas were the completion of the Handicap Singles in the final of which Tony Thornton beat Paul Griffith in an extremely close final which could have gone either way, and a competition on Easter Sunday. That took the form of "Eggwin's North versus South" (of England, that is). The Northerners won overall and the prizes went to Peter and Val Allard with Bob Scott representing the North who won the big chocolate eggs and to the runners-up Ron and Pam Cole representing the south who won small eggs. The prizes were given by Edwin and Susan Hewitt. After the bowling Hot Cross Buns were available.
Mijas League players reached the final of the League Cup this year in which they met the team from Benalmadena; it had to be played on two days, as on the first it rained heavily and the players were trying to bowl through standing water, but when it was resumed on the second day the weather was much kinder. Sadly, the Mijas team did not win, but it was an enjoyable occasion and they were still smiling afterwards.
The Champion of Champions has also taken place. The two representatives from Mijas, Barbara Land and Bill Gregory, did extremely well finishing in second and third places respectively.
Off the bowling green the Annual General Meeting has been held. Ann Fenton who had completed her year as Captain handed over the reins to Carol Wright and Stuart Parkin took over as Vice – Captain. Christine Wilson was re-elected onto the committee, Rob Robinson was elected on again after a period of a few years away from it and Wilf Newman became an absolutely new committee member.
Now, as the Winter Championships take place, it really is the end of the season.
