In-House Competitions Played at Mijas Bowls Club.

Report by Christine Wilson. Photographs by Eric Wilson.

The In-House competitions are nearly over for another year. The only one to be completed now is the Handicap Singles, which, at the time of writing this report is on-going.

It is always good to see some different names amongst the winners and that has certainly been the case this year.

The Ladies' and Men's Singles were played up to semi-final stage before the week allotted so as to be able to fit everything into the week. The winner of the Men's Singles, played on Saturday 31st January, as he was due to fly back to the UK on Sunday, was Bill Gregory. He beat Hal Briscoe in a very good match. The Ladies' Singles winner was none other than Barbara Land, an excellent singles player, who beat Val Thornton in a close game. Val pulled slightly ahead at the beginning, but Barbara soon caught up and seemed to move up a gear to keep just in front, but Val never gave up. So, the two players who will represent Mijas in the Champion of Champions are Barbara Land and Bill Gregory.

The Drawn Pairs resulted in a win for Tony Land and Stuart Parkin over Geoff Hutton and Ann Fenton. In that match it seemed that Stuart could not go wrong; he played an excellent game.

The Drawn Triples saw Tony Thornton, Bill Gregory and Wilf Newman become the winners over Hal Briscoe Clive Thomas and Val Thornton. The wind on that day was very strong and it was Tony's team who overcame those conditions more easily than Hal's team.

The trophies were presented on Monday 2nd February by a representative from Speed Financial Solutions, the sponsor of this competition. A prize giving dinner will be held on Monday 2nd March.
