BALL AND CHAIN DECEMBER 2013

Report by Christine Wilson Photographs by Eric Wilson

The "Ball and Chain" if not the longest running tournament on the coast, is most certainly one of the longest running, as the first record of it being played goes back to 1991.

The sponsor on this occasion was Focus Investment Planning.

During the early rounds there were some very close games, quite a few being won or lost on the last end or by only one shot. Those who were knocked out in the first round were able to to join the plate competition which ran alongside the main one.

The plate finalists were Mijas members Val and Tony Thornton against Maureen and Terry Barrett from Bel Playa. Val and Tony found it difficult to get going on that afternoon and so the eventual winners were Maureen and Terry.

One of the semifinals of the main event between Barrie and Angie Holt of Lauro and the Mijas couple Peter and Val Allard was a very low scoring and a very close game as the last end started at 13 all. Barry and Angie became the winners of that match. The other semifinal was between Theo and Nel Bellaart and a much favoured couple Kate Morris and Brian Todd, all from Bel Playa. Theo and Nel overcame Kate and Brian to join the Lauro couple, Barry and Angie, in what was to be a very good final. Seeing Theo and Nel play was like watching a master class in bowling so it was no surprise that they were the eventual winners. It was the first time the Bellaarts had played in the Ball and Chain though they are not newcomers to bowling as Theo has been involved in European bowling over the years. They are from Holland and like many British bowlers spend the winter in Spain to get away from the Northern European weather. We look forward to seeing them again next year to defend their title.

Unfortunately the sponsor was not there to present the prizes as he had been called back to England, so they were presented by Robert Wright, the Captain of Mijas. A buffet organised by Carol Wright and her helpers followed the event
