An Exciting Final to the "Ball and Chain" at Mijas Bowls Club
Report by Christine Wilson Photographs by Eric Wilson
The Ball and Chain, sponsored by BMI, a bowls competition for couples and partners, was postponed for two days because of heavy rain prior to the starting date making the green unplayable, and also a forecast from the Malaga meteorological station being inaccurate. However it got under way on Monday 1st December in sunshine and was played throughout in sunshine except for the Wednesday morning's game when it was cold and wet.
There were some very closely fought games in the early rounds, but the best was kept for the final which was between Alan and Margaret Bicknell from Bel Playa and Tony and Val Thornton from Mijas. Sometimes a final of a competition can be a disappointment, but not this one. It was a very low scoring and excitingly close game with the score on two or three occasions being equal and more often than not only one or two shots between the two couples. However, after 17 ends the Thorntons were ahead by three with the score at 17/14. On the last end, try as they might, Alan and Margaret could only manage to score two, making Tony and Val the winners by just one shot. All the spectators remarked afterwards what a superbly exciting game it had been.
The sponsor for this competition was BMI; unfortunately due to pressure of work there was no representative in attendance on that last afternoon. After the presentation a buffet was enjoyed by players and spectators.
